What is Save the Waterberg Rhino doing to help?

Save the Waterberg Rhino is a registered NPO, with an established board and clear governance & financial policies. We are dependent on funding and donations from the public and receive no government grants.

Save the Waterberg Rhino raises funds to be able to achieve our aims and objectives, and works in close conjunction with private reserves, rhino owners, APU’s  and South African National Parks.

We have to date managed to procure the following through funding and sponsors:

  • A Roadblock and response trailer
  • High tech equipment such as night vision camera traps and GPS
  • Two-way radios and a dedicated rhino emergency channel
  • High visibility jackets and decals for roadblocks with South African Police Services
  • Crime scene equipment
  • Binoculars and search lights for search patrol groups
  • Bullet proof vests for anti-poaching units
  • Surface to air radio for communication with areal patrols
  • Rhino horn sniffer dog and handler for deployment in the Waterberg
  • Vehicle for dog handler and rhino response team
  • Funding to train 30 Rhino monitors in 2014
  • Funding to 40 rhino monitors in 2014-2015
  • Close combat training and trauma first aid courses
  • Security workshops for strategic security planning
  • Rhino horn treatment
  • Security signage along major routes in the Waterberg
  • Fuel for anti-poaching and security patrols
  • Environmental education programmes pertaining to rhino conservation
  • Awareness programmes including various events and literature for distribution
  • Funding and facilitation support for security clusters
  • Employment of 2 x full time staff to facilitate projects
  • Funding support of the Waterberg Reaction Joint Operational Command
  • Funding towards integrated cameras and systems, such as license plates recognition cameras, linked to our national ENATIS system.
  • Employment of full time community liaison officer
  • Mobile security housing for deployment for road monitoring and security support
  • Funding for operational costs for vehicles to facilitate projects
  • Funding for the training of SAPS, security providers and rangers and community members.
